A bastide is a town or village in the south west of France which is, or was once, fortified. The term means “new town”, and comes from the medieval period, which is when most bastides were founded. They usually have a geometric street plan, although some of them, such as Lauzerte in the Tarn et Garonne department have been forced into other shapes by the relief of the site.
