La Roque Gageac, in the department of the Dordogne, is classed as one of "les plus beaux villages de France". Squeezed between a towering cliff and the river Dordogne, the village is certainly set in a unique spot - but unfortunately this means that it can get very full of visitors, even quite in the spring.
Once an important port, the river is now more likely to see fleets of canoes setting off.
